Leornian Consulting were recently invited by the HR Xchange Forum to deliver an interactive session for their membership. We collaborated with one of our long term partners – Steps Drama – to create a high impact event focusing on Grasping the Nettle.

Aimed at people managers, Grasping the Nettle is a programme which encourages managers to tackle poor performance before it gets serious. Helping managers to understand the legal context for dealing with performance issues, the programme uses role-play scenarios to encourage the practical application of skills in a safe learning environment.

For the HR Xchange Forum, we adapted the programme to fit a half day session. Using a mixture of theory, interactive media, facilitated discussion and experiential learning, we introduced delegates to the key concepts of Grasping the Nettle - the need to act fairly, consistently, reasonably and to 'begin with the end in mind'. Leornian’s Paula Hutchings led the session, introducing the critical considerations for managers – and drawing on the knowledge and opinion in the room, which was rich and varied.

Through our interactive methods, Forum members developed practical skills to investigate performance issues and hold more effective performance conversations. This experiential approach illustrated the behavioural challenges associated with performance management - and delegates were able to take an active role in exploring the issues from a variety of perspectives.

Feedback from members of the Forum was resoundingly positive, with one commenting that the session had been 'incredibly useful in unpicking the reality of effective performance management and the importance of getting it right.'
